Department Website Redesign

Department websites are one of the most important tools for students’ education–to learn about courses, connect with faculty, and stay involved with department events. ASSETT staff can work with department staff to assist with redesigning websites to maximize their contribution to teaching and learning. For more information, contact Brenda Niave.

VHS Digitization and Streaming Course Reserves

In Summer 2009, ASSETT began partnering with University Libraries to assist faculty in moving course materials into a digital format.  The first project provides a $30 credit for any A&S faculty member to use University Library’s Media Services to digitize course materials that are currently in VHS format. The credit will digitize approximately 2 hours of video. The second project is a pilot for adding streaming video as part of the course reserve system. The library will digitize and encode material into a Flash 10 format that can be accessed online through Chinook, using a CU Identikey and a unique course password. The system will support material that is copyrighted as well as material that is not copyrighted. Materials will be available only during the semester during which the course is taught, though faculty also may request them as part of a course a following semester.  ASSETT funds will be used to employ students who will digitize and encode the materials. For more information, contact Laura Konyha.

Social Media in the Classroom

Social media, also called social networking, is one of the fastest growing areas of online applications. This project assists faculty who would like to incorporate social media into their courses.  During 09-10, we will be working with faculty developing and delivering assignments and students activities using  Facebook, Ning, and Twitter.  We’ll host open brown-bag discussions for faculty who would like to learn more. For more information, contact Mark Gammon.

How We Teach: Vidcast of Teaching Scholars on Teaching

Much of ASSETT’s mission is to foster collegiality in creating resources not only rich in the use of technology but that also cultivate sound pedagogical practices. During Fall 09, we are partnering with the Faculty Teaching Excellence Program (FTEP) on a pilot project to produce online videos that will offer insights and advice about teaching excellence. The  short video clips will feature CU President’s Teaching Scholars discussing teaching techniques that have proven successful in their careers. One obvious goal of the video clips is to provide resources for all faculty from which to draw new ideas and ways of thinking about their own teaching and the learning experiences of their students. Additionally, the How We Teach project could be a springboard for similar initiatives in the future. For more information, contact Amanda McAndrew

Research Projects: Understanding Emerging Technologies in a University Context

ASSETT conducts interviews, surveys, and focus groups with Arts & Sciences faculty, staff, and students in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the opportunities and challenges faced by different stakeholders in the University context. The results of ASSETT research projects are disseminated back to our stakeholders in reports made available through our website. These reports also inform the development of future ASSETT initiatives. For more information, contact Amanda Porter.
